Best Selling Cars
In January, the Indian automobile industry got off to a good start for the year. The momentum continued in the following month with the 10 best-selling cars remaining the same as the previous month, although there were some notable shifts in rankings. Maruti Suzuki maintained its dominance by having six cars in the top ten, while the rest of the spots were taken by two Tata cars, one Mahindra car, and one Hyundai car. Autopunditz has released the list of the top 10 selling cars in India for February 2024.
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R
In February 2024, the Wagon R by Maruti secured the top spot as the best-selling car with 19,412 units sold, showing a 15 percent increase compared to the previous year. Known for its rich history in the hatchback segment, the Wagon R is a reliable choice for urban buyers and commercial fleet operators alike. Its user-friendly features, practical design, fuel efficiency, and other qualities make it a popular hatchback in India. Recently, sightings of the facelifted Wagon R test model suggest an imminent launch. Maruti offers the WagonR with two petrol engine options: a 1-litre and a 1.2-litre engine, both available with manual or AMT transmissions. Additionally, the 1-litre engine variant can be equipped with a CNG kit, providing impressive mileage figures of 25.19 km/l on petrol and 34.05 km/kg on CNG.
Tata Punch
The Tata Punch has experienced remarkable success since its launch, with its popularity soaring even higher recently. In February 2024, it secured the position of the second best-selling car, surpassing its predecessor, the Tata Nexon. With sales of 18,438 units, the Punch witnessed a 65 percent increase compared to the same month the previous year. The introduction of the Tata Punch EV has significantly boosted its sales, alongside its existing petrol and CNG variants. The Punch’s appeal lies in its rugged design, elevated seating, SUV-like interiors, and a 5-star G-NCAP safety rating, making it one of the safest cars in India.
The Punch is offered in petrol, CNG, and electric versions. The petrol variants are equipped with a 1.2-liter engine mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT gearbox. The Tata Punch EV is available with a choice of a 25 kWh or a 35 kWh battery, providing ranges of 315 km and 421 km, respectively.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno
In February 2024, the Maruti Baleno secured the third position on this list by selling 17,517 units. Despite experiencing a 6 percent decline in its year-on-year performance, the Baleno continues to dominate as the only premium hatchback among the top 10 best-selling cars. Notably, the Baleno outperformed its SUV-derivative, Fronx, by a significant margin. Renowned for its family-friendly characteristics and cost-effective running, the Maruti Baleno has consistently maintained its position as the best-selling premium hatchback and is widely regarded as one of Maruti’s most successful vehicles.
Equipped with the same 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine as the Maruti Swift, the Baleno offers the choice between a 5-speed manual or 5-speed AMT transmission. Additionally, it is also available in CNG-powered variants. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Baleno delivers an impressive mileage of 22.94 km/l from petrol and 30.61 km/kg from CNG.
Maruti Suzuki Dzire
In yet another month, the Maruti Dzire has once again demonstrated its dominance in the sedan segment. As the only sedan on this list, the Dzire has solidified its position as one of India’s most successful cars. Despite a slight decline of 6 percent, the Dzire managed to sell an impressive 15,837 units last month, securing a spot among the top five.
What sets the Dzire apart from its competitors is its exceptional comfort, effortless handling, and impressive fuel efficiency, making it the perfect compact sedan for navigating city roads. Additionally, similar to its sibling, the Wagon R, the Dzire is a popular choice among cab companies due to its practicality.
As the sedan version of the Maruti Swift, it is expected that a new Dzire will be introduced to the market this year, as Maruti is already preparing for the next-generation Swift.
Currently, the Dzire is equipped with a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine, available with either a 5-speed manual gearbox or a 5-speed AMT. Furthermore, it also offers CNG variants that provide an impressive mileage of 31.12 km/kg, while the petrol mileage ranges from 22.41 to 22.61 km/l.
Maruti Suzuki Brezza
The Maruti Brezza has once again outperformed the Tata Nexon, its segment leader, by selling 15,765 units in February 2024. Despite minimal year-on-year growth, the Brezza remains one of the best-selling compact SUVs, surpassing its sibling, the Fronx. Offering a well-rounded package in terms of space, comfort, and powertrains, the Brezza stands out for its reliability as the top carmaker in India. Additionally, maintaining the structural integrity of its previous generation, the Brezza is the most robust Maruti vehicle currently available.
Maruti provides the Brezza with a 1.5-liter petrol engine, available with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Furthermore, equipped with mild-hybrid technology in all automatic variants, the Brezza achieves a mileage of 17.38 – 19.8 km/l. Similar to other Maruti models, the Brezza also comes in CNG variants, delivering a mileage of 25.51 km/kg.
Maruti Suzuki Ertiga
In February 2024, the Maruti Ertiga achieved an impressive sales figure of 15,519 units, marking a remarkable 140 percent year-on-year growth. Undoubtedly, the Maruti Ertiga stands as the top-selling MUV in India, owing to its well-established reputation over the years. With its spacious interior accommodating seven occupants, reliable engineering, and fuel-efficient powertrain, the Ertiga effectively caters to the needs of the average MUV buyer in India, surpassing its competitors in terms of monthly sales. Additionally, the availability of CNG variants further enhances its appeal, particularly for cab companies that greatly benefit from this option.
Under the hood, the Ertiga is equipped with a 1.5-litre petrol engine featuring mild hybrid technology. It offers two transmission options: a 5-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed automatic transmission. In terms of fuel efficiency, the Ertiga delivers an impressive mileage of 20.51 km/l on petrol and 26.11 km/kg on CNG.
Hyundai Creta
The recent launch of the 2024 Hyundai Creta facelift has caused quite a stir in the automotive industry this year. This popular Hyundai model has significantly impacted the Indian car market and its latest iteration has raised the bar considerably. Despite fierce competition in its segment, the Hyundai Creta has consistently been the top-selling mid-size SUV, with the current version being the only Hyundai vehicle to make it to the list of top 10 best-selling cars. In the previous month alone, the new Creta achieved sales of 15,276 units, marking a remarkable 47 percent year-on-year growth.
Similar to its predecessor, the updated Creta is equipped with a 1.5-liter NA petrol engine paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox and an iVT automatic transmission, as well as a 1.5-liter turbo diesel engine matched with a 6-speed manual gearbox and a 6-speed torque converter automatic. Hyundai has also introduced a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine combined with a 7-speed DCT automatic transmission, which is the same powertrain found in models such as the Kia Seltos, Kia Carens, Hyundai Alcazar, and Hyundai Verna.
