Bihar Violence: Communal tensions flared in various as clashes broke out during Saraswati idol immersion ceremonies, leaving over 40 individuals injured. The incidents, which occurred in Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, Saharsa, Sitamarhi, Sheikhpura, Siwan, and Jamui, have prompted authorities to take swift action to quell the violence and maintain public order.
Darbhanga Clashes:
The trouble began in Darbhanga’s Bahera market when clashes erupted between two communities during a Saraswati idol immersion procession. Stones were reportedly pelted at the procession, leading to a violent confrontation. In response, the Ranchi Police imposed Section 144 as a precautionary measure in the area to prevent further escalation of tensions.
Police Action and Arrests Bihar Violence:
According to reports, the police have arrested approximately 50 suspects in Darbhanga alone, and raids are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects involved in the clashes. Separate FIRs have been lodged against 170 named accused and 400 unidentified individuals across multiple police stations in the region. Darbhanga’s senior SP Jagunath Jala Reddy confirmed that 53 named accused have been arrested and placed in judicial custody.

Similar incidents of communal clashes were reported in Bhagalpur, Saharsa, Sitamarhi, Sheikhpura, Siwan, and Jamui districts during Saraswati idol immersion processions. In Bhagalpur, a clash erupted after stones were allegedly hurled at a procession en route to immerse the Goddess Saraswati idol in the Lodipur area. Gunshots were also fired during the clashes, resulting in injuries to approximately 15 individuals participating in the procession.

Police reinforcements, led by Bhagalpur City Superintendent of Police (SP) Raj, were deployed to the scene to control the situation and restore order. Subdivisional magistrate (SDM) Dhananjay Kumar emphasized the importance of scrutinizing CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators and urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors on social media platforms.

The unrest prompted authorities to suspend internet services in Darbhanga district for 48 hours to prevent the dissemination of inflammatory content and curb the spread of rumors. Additional chief secretary to the government Dr. S Siddharth issued a notification citing the need to prevent anti-social elements from using the internet to incite violence and disrupt communal harmony. The suspension of internet services is slated to be lifted on Monday, following a reassessment of the situation by officials.
