Kolkata Metro Expansion: Enhancing Connectivity and Efficiency
Kolkata Metro Railway is undergoing a significant expansion, with the inauguration of three new lines scheduled for March 15, 2024. The inauguration ceremony, officiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 6, marks a pivotal moment in enhancing the city’s public transportation system, offering residents faster, more convenient, and environmentally friendly travel options.
Green Line: India’s First Underwater Metro Service
The highlight of the expansion is the inauguration of the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade stretch of the Green Line. This route, celebrated as India’s first underwater metro service, connects the vital business districts of Howrah and Sealdah. Commencing regular services on March 15, the Green Line will witness the first trains departing simultaneously from both stations at 7:00 am, with operations continuing until 9:45 pm. Notably, Sundays will be observed as no-service days on the Green Line.
Orange Line: Mid-Day Connectivity
Another significant addition is the Kavi Subhash to Hemanta Mukhopadhyay section of the Orange Line. This line facilitates travel between these two stations, commencing services on March 15. The schedule for the Orange Line sees the first trains departing at 9:00 am from both stations, with operations concluding at 4:40 pm. Unlike the Green Line, the Orange Line will not operate on Saturdays and Sundays.
Purple Line: Extending Reach to Southern Suburbs
Expanding the Kolkata Metro’s reach to the southern suburbs, the Joka to Majerhat stretch of the Purple Line is set to commence commercial services on March 15. Passengers can enjoy expedited commutes between these stations, with the first trains departing at 8:30 am from both Joka and Majerhat. Operations will cease at 3:35 pm, and akin to the Orange Line, the Purple Line will not operate on Saturdays and Sundays.
