McDonald Revokes License : The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has taken stringent action against a McDonald’s outlet in Ahmednagar district, revoking its license following an investigation into the use of a cheese substitute in their dishes without proper disclosure.

The fast-food giant’s eatery came under FDA scrutiny for allegedly incorporating a “cheese-like” product in its menu items without explicitly indicating that it was a cheese substitute, thereby misleading consumers. After an inspection and subsequent objections, the outlet’s license was initially suspended. However, upon the chain’s compliance report confirming the removal of the term ‘cheese’ from product names, the license was ultimately revoked.

FDA officials discovered during an inspection that the outlet advertised menu items such as American Cheese Burger, Cheese Nuggets, and Blueberry Cheese Cake, which implied the use of genuine cheese. Further analysis revealed the use of a cheese analogue or substitute containing both milk fat and vegetable fat instead of pure cheese.

The FDA sought clarification from McDonald’s regarding the composition of their cheese-containing products, particularly concerning the presence of milk fat and vegetable fat in cheese analogues. Following an unsatisfactory response, the license suspension was enforced in November, pending compliance with labeling regulations.

In a directive issued by FDA Commissioner Abhimanyu Kale, McDonald’s was instructed to revise labeling to accurately reflect the use of cheese analogues, ensuring clear differentiation from authentic cheese products. The order mandated prominent labeling of products as “cheese analogue” or “non-dairy cheese,” along with comprehensive ingredient listings and informative signage to educate customers about the use of substitutes.

In response, McDonald’s India (West & South) acknowledged the compliance requirements and assured customers of their commitment to using genuine, high-quality cheese in all products. The company emphasized adherence to global standards and transparency in ingredient sourcing, reaffirming its dedication to providing top-quality meals to consumers.

As the controversy unfolds, McDonald’s remains engaged with regulatory authorities to address concerns and uphold food safety standards, underscoring its unwavering commitment to transparency and customer satisfaction.
