The Indian cricket team’s T20 World Cup victory celebration is in full swing. After meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, the team arrived in New Delhi early on Thursday morning to a warm welcome at the IGI Airport.

The players will have a busy day ahead, with a BCCI felicitation function at the Wankhede Stadium and an open bus trophy tour in Mumbai. Team India found themselves stranded in Barbados due to a hurricane, however, they were successfully evacuated from the West Indies via a chartered flight. The team departed from Barbados and arrived at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on an Air India flight AIC24WC, also known as Air India Champions 24 World Cup, after a 16-hour direct journey. The flight took off at approximately 4:50 am local time on Wednesday and landed in Delhi at 6 am IST on Thursday. Team India emerged victorious over South Africa by a margin of seven runs in the final match held in Bridgetown last Saturday.

The stadium currently appears deserted, save for the lower stand of the Vijay Merchant pavilion, which offers some shade and is occupied by nearly 100 resting cops. A dais with a blue carpet is being set up in front of the sight screen near the pavilion, with a large #CHAMPIONS cutout placed in one corner.

Chants of “Mumbai cha Raja, Rohit Sharma!” can be heard from one of the entrances, where hundreds of fans are gathered. The gates are not due to open for at least another hour.
